John Lort Stokes (b. 1811 - d. 1885) was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1837 and sailed to Australia on the Beagle under Commander J.C. and P.P. King. Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia.
